CALL TO ARTISTS: Renewal Art Show
Words Hannah Serrano
Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009 at 3:42 am
It is my honor and pleasure to be invited once again this year to jury the Renewal Art Show at the Warehouse in Norfolk.
The event’s organizers have announced a call to artists for submissions. The deadline is March 27.
I was a juror last year along with the esteemed Miss Ragan Cole-Cunningham of CAC and the infamous Captain Carl, “art patron extraordinaire.” It seemed oh-so-long ago; I was yet a young Arts & Culture Editor at Port Folio, eager to make use of my many years of devotion to art history.
In particular being involved with the show allowed me the chance to experience on a very acute level the fierce and quiet passion that unknown local artists have for their personal and professional work, the diversity of talent and perspective; and now I’m again ever-grateful to be bestowed it once more.
This year, my fellow jurors include regional artist Nancy Dooley and the exceptional Rick Nickel, ceramics professor at ODU. Rick was a recipient of a special jurors’ award last year for his dynamic sculpture of a Garden of Eden-inspired tableaux.
The show is an annual juried exhibit welcoming entries of all media and style. Artistic interpretation of the theme, ‘renewal,’ weighs as heavily into the judgment process as technical merit.
Last year’s show was extremely well-attended–packed, actually–and the live performance by local artist Cherie Roe was unforgettable. I’ve attended a great many art openings, and that one was on par with an exhilirating night in Chelsea.
I hope you will think about participating in this awesome show and submit your artwork; or at least that you will save the date of the show, April 24. It will be another blockbuster art event, I’m certain.

ABOUT THE WRITER
did not go to journalism school. She studied art history rather. She was born in the Philippines, raised in Virginia Beach, and always loved words more than pictures but had a feeling she might be bad with deadlines. Nevertheless, after university Serrano moved back to the area and eventually became the Arts & Culture Editor at Port Folio Weekly. When the ship went down at PFW, she started 24SevenCities, which is now AltDaily, which is what you are reading now. If you like what's on this site, let her know by emailing hannah@altdaily.com. If you don't, forward your complaints to her partner Jesse Scaccia at jesse@altdaily.com.
